Sexy Sadie. No, Revolution. No wait a minute, Across the Universe is correct. Oh wait, I forgot about I'm Only Sleeping...that's an impossible question to answer.

Post Beatles I would say...Watching the Wheels or Beautiful Boy.

If you like this song, please check this out. Just TRY not to get up and dance while listening to this.

My favorite aspect of this is how the horns echo John Lennon's guitar riff at the beginning :)

Red Clay is an amazing album! It was recorded not too far from where I live, 17 years before I was born :-)

Might be Hubbard's best work. Any album with Herbie is good in my book.

Cold Turkey is brilliant.

BTW, have you heard the live version of Red Clay from the latest edition of the album, from 1971? That may be the most exhilarating piece of music I've ever heard, including the Dead (gasp!!!).

I had no idea you weren't a 40 - 60 year old man. I just assume everybody here fits that profile until I find out otherwise. I really thought me, wisc, and caboose were the only real young blood actively posting here.

I have not heard the live version you refer to. Is it on the YouTube or someplace for me to hear?

BTW, take the old man comment as a compliment. It shows that you know your shit. Also, what instrument do you play?

You need headphones for the full experience. Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Turrentine, George Benson all redefine the capabilities of their instruments with their solos. Billy Cobham tears his drum set a new one throughout - check out how he continually starts each solo playing it ultra-tight and condensed, and then gradually opens up his sound as the solo develops. Unreal.

Also notice Freddie quoting the song "Sonny", starting at 2:40. The changes to the jam section in Red Clay are 100% jacked from that song. You can see Bobby Hebb playing it with Ron Carter here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRWyxzmNdJc

ALSO listen to the orchestrated WHAPS and energy builds from the rhythm section during each solo.... just magical.

and of course it's a compliment! I took it that way! I DO know my shit! Yes!!!

I play piano & guitar, almost was a jazz piano major in college but decided to do math instead.

I think my 300 watt speakers will do the trick. I like to feel the bass, rather than just hear it.

Thanks for the links. I will listen to them as soon as I get a chance.

I wish I kept up with the keys. I used to play a bit, but the guitar has taken over as my instrument of choice. I just wish I had more time to play these days. I usually am multi-tasking while I listen to music, whereas I can't do the same when I play music. Makes it difficult to play as much as I'd like.

Math sure isn't as exciting as music, but I imagine there are more/better career options in that field right now. Hopefully you find math to be more stimulating than I do. Twas one of my better subjects, but my least favorite by a large margin.

And as for careers, math is almost as useless as music, especially if you suck at it. What are my career options exactly? Professor, and .... wait, that's it

"Most people think i'm being a douche when I say that, but in fact THEY are the douches."

No doucheness there. You're correct in that the ones who dub you a douche are in fact carrying out douchebaggery themselves.

As for career options, there may not be a great deal of different types of jobs, but I think there are more job positions available than you would find if you stuck with the jazz piano major. A LOT of companies need people that are good with numbers. How about a research analyst? Financial engineer? Biostatistician? (Growing demand in this field right now). There are countless jobs available in statistics.

I know a math major who recently be came an actuary. While that's widely regarded as one of the most dull jobs in the industry, the starting salary is 50K, and those jobs are in high demand right now. From forbes.com:

"Actuaries are in great demand for several reasons, says James Miles, a fellow of the Society of Actuaries and member of the American Academy of Actuaries. First, assessing risk has become more important than ever in this financially treacherous time. Many companies have created a new actuarial executive position, that of chief risk officer. With margins thinner, actuarial accuracy is more necessary than ever to companies and to the global economy."

There really are a lot of possibilities. But then again, if you suck at math like you said, you can eliminate some of the options lol. Teaching is a good route to go though. You can teach some math courses and a music course! I took a music class in college where I knew more than the professor, and of course felt obligated to correct every mistake he made (at least once per class). So surely you can teach a music course. I don't think a music degree is a requirement, especially if you know your shit! Sorry for rambling. Still feeling the effects of last night.

Oh, you're not the only person who has said that about math and music. I had no less than two boyfriends who said exactly the same thing. Guess what they do now? They're professors.

Of course, if you're good at math, there's always hedge funds. Make millions. Envision new ways to mess up the world's economy. Nah, stick with the professor route. You're less likely to get subpoenaed :-)

Hmm... hard for me to explain, but math is actually just as beautiful as music to me. Most people think i'm being a douche when I say that, but in fact THEY are the douches.

Not that you're a douche. Unless you think I am a douche, in which case you are a douche.

in honor of the way I feel today...I'm so Tired. my mind is on the blink...Happiness is a Warm Gun is right up there followed by Yer Blues. The White Album is Desert Isle material for sure.

John Lennon and Grateful Dead were always intertwined for me, my first show was NYE just after John was killed. That show brought me back to life and kept me sustained for the next 15 years...

Changes all the time. Weak answer but it's true. I like Dig A Pony a lot. Maybe not as deep as some but I don't care. Big fan of the Let it Be album.

"Tomorrow Never Knows"," Walrus," Rain", "She Said", John's part of " Day in the Life " the earlies demo of "Strawberry Fields"...and most of the others everyone has mentioned . Maybe "Walrus" for me, in the 60's that a song as weird as this could be a hit !

without the Beatles it's probably "Jealous Guy"...the lyrics of that song are so real. It's something almost everyone can relate to once they've had a few relationships. I'm not really sure about with. That would be tougher to narrow down.

Cheating I'm afraid but it's a two-way tie between 'Across the Universe' and 'Tomorrow never knows'. I also thing George Martin deserves some credit for these and so much more.
